KATS declare ‘War’ on Kilkenny

WAR by Roddy Doyle, presented by KATS Theatre Group

Roddy Doyle’s smash hit comedy ‘WAR’ is coming to the Watergate Theatre in September.

Last time we saw KATS Theatre Group, they were completing their sold out run of ‘Shadow of a Gunman’ in Cleere’s Theatre last March. This time they’ve dropped the gun for the pen to officially declare WAR on Kilkenny City.

Speaking at the launch of WAR last Friday night in Brewery Corner, KATS Chairman Ciarán Dunphy welcomed the eclectic bunch of politicians, cast members and special guests to the venue to formally get this mammoth ensemble play on the road.

KATS have been performing plays in Kilkenny for over thirty years, making them by far the oldest theatre group in town. They’ve recently stunned audiences with the autobiographical masterpiece ‘The Elephant Man’ and this time take a break from dark drama to invite audiences back to hilarious and tragic Barrytown, Dublin where they’ll be familiar with The Snapper, The Van and The Commitments.

This, however, is the world of the pub quiz where men are men and the questions sting like crazy. Set in the late 80’s, WAR takes place in a typical Irish lounge and features an exceptional ensemble cast going toe to toe – with familiar KATS faces blending with new talent. Alan Grant plays George, the quizaholic, who’d rather answer questions on geography than interact with his ever lonely wife (Dee Gibney). Other cast members include Maeve O’Flynn, Steve Nolan, Grum Gallagher, Niall Bambrick, Shay Lawlor and Teresa Brennan.

This Roddy Doyle classic comedy is Irish theatre in its most real and raw form dealing with many issues that parallel modern Ireland. Speaking at the launch, Chairman Ciarán Dunphy referenced the irony of KATS performing a play first performed when the group was in its infancy 30 years ago and yet so much in Ireland remains unchanged.

“We still had a huge county-wide pub quiz on last night, we still have high levels of unemployment in our youth and we still can have a laugh at our own expense. Roddy Doyle’s work could be performed in another three decades and we’d be certain it would still be as relevant then as it was in the 1980’s”.

‘WAR’ will be performed for four nights only from September 21st to 24th in the Watergate Theatre, Kilkenny. Tickets are on sale now from Watergate online Box office or by calling 056 7761674. Follow KATS THEATRE GROUP on Facebook or Twitter for more details.

As they say themselves, if you’re set in a country pub, you may as well rehearse in a country pub.

With the national opening night approaching next week, Opera Theatre Company sent their photographer to the La bohème rehearsals to give you a sneak preview of the team in action and to chat to Director Ben Barnes and some of the amazing artists involved.

La bohème tickets are selling well for their performance in Kilkenny later this month and right across the nationwide tour, so we’d recommend booking tickets soon to make sure you don’t miss out!

With one of the most ravishingly seductive scores ever written, La bohème has soaring arias and thrilling dramatic ensembles. Puccini’s orchestration is vividly brought to life in this special arrangement for 13-piece ensemble, including the unique RTÉ Con Tempo quartet and other leading players, conducted by Andrew Greenwood.

This strikingly beautiful production, set in Paris in 1930, is directed by OTC’s founder Artistic Director Ben Barnes, with set and costume design by award winning Joe Vanek, lighting design by John Comiskey and movement direction by Libby Seward.
