Dancing at Lughnasa was originally presented by the Abbey Theatre in 1990 and went on to win numerous awards in the early nineties. The story is set in a small village called Ballybeg in Donegal in the year 1936. The Mundy sisters are at the centre of the story. A play in two acts, Michael Evans, the Narrator recalls the summer in his aunts’ cottage when he was 7 years old. He relates some of the events that are going to change his and his family’s lives forever. Religion, the need for self expression and the importance of family are some of the themes dealt with in this powerful play.
The Barn Owl Players began in 2007 when Barnstorm Theatre Company recruited the first Adult Theatre Club. The club is a resource to local people who want to explore theatre in all its aspects – as actors, stage managers, writers, spectators etc.
Dancing at Lughnasa is their second full length play in the Watergate Theatre. The talented cast includes Dee Gibney, Janis Woodgate, Mary Cody, Nicola Keating, Sinead Goggin, John Whitley, Michael Somers and Jim Carroll.
