Originally staged in 1973, Equus is a compelling, thought provoking drama that explores the complex relationships between worship, myth and sexuality. It was revived for the West End in 2007 with Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe’s lead attracting media attention for his first stage role and a head-grabbing flash of nudity.
Based on a true story, it centres on the grim crime of 17-year-old Alan Strang who blinds six horses with a metal spike and is therefore, not unreasonably, sent to a secure psychiatric hospital. Martin Dysart, the child psychiatrist assigned to him, begins to probe Alan’s past in an attempt to understand his motives. Initially the boy is silent and uncooperative, but as Dysart digs deeper, he begins to win Alan’s trust and the truth finally emerges. Finally, as Alan struggles to be free of his demons, he must relive the events of that terrible night.
Even though it was written nearly 40 years ago Peter Shaffer’s Equus remains a frighteningly relevant drama. Directed by Michael Cabot, London Classic Theatre’s production shines an unflinching light on the ills of society that reacts without understanding. It recreates elements from the award-winning original production, such as the wire mask clad actors as horses and the cast sitting around the stage, like the audience, in judgement of the action. There is no doubting the play is a magnificent piece of theatre; unsettling, dynamic and creative.
Equus contains strong language, adult themes and nudity.
