Upstairs Gallery

The upstairs gallery at the Watergate Theatre, home to our coffee dock (serving coffee, tea, wine, minerals and snacks at show interval times), is an exhibition space programmed by the Kilkenny County Council Arts Office.
The gallery is currently hosting an exhibition of works from former artists in residence of Kilkenny Arts Office, running until October 14th.
Now Showing: Collected Works
Come and view the next exhibition from Kilkenny County Council Arts Office, ‘Collected Works’ at the Watergate Theatre’s Upstairs Gallery from 16th September to 14th October 2011. This show is a selection of diverse works highlight many of the parts Artists in Residence undertaken at No. 72 and No. 76 John Street over their four year period there, including Patrick O’Connor’s exquisite drawings and paintings, Gypsy Ray, who in 2009 focussed on her swimmer drawings whilst also involving the public and creating a number of wonderful blind contour drawings, and Lesley Frew, who in 2008 created her work from recycled plastic bags giving the materials a second life by transforming and reusing them.
Illustrating Illustration explores this art form, offering the audience a tour of the process from concept creation to the final reproduction of the image. It will also open discussion around two principles. Namely that there is no one original in illustration and that illustration cannot exist by itself i.e. the text, object, concept etc. is what is being illustrated.
Artists from this exhibition in 2008 will also featured in this exhibition including Steven Aylin (IRL), Melina Beck (USA), Ine Fiebig (GER), Jordan Isip (USA) and Chris Sickets a.k.a. Red Nose Studio (USA).
